The three great propositions of discipleship are found in the Gospel of Matthew. They are 1. The Great Condition: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt. 4:9). 2. The Great Confession: “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” (Matt. 16:16). 3. The Great Commission: “Go, Teach and Baptize” (Matt. 28:19).
When these three propositions become part of the life of the believer, then God does wonderful things and expands his church. The Great Condition shows us that our focus is in the person of Jesus our Lord. Anything good that comes of the Christian life comes as a result of following Jesus. The Great Confession shows what our major message is. It is to center on who our Lord is, his greatness, and how he is the promised One. The Great Commission shows us that the whole world needs our message and gives us a life-long purpose. As long as there are people who have not heard, or who are not following Jesus, we have a purpose.
In seeing the big picture that these propositions reveal, we can understand the relationship between evangelism and discipleship. We are to move from one to another as people respond to Christ. Also, this helps us to concentrate on what our specific task should be. It is not to build buildings or organizations, but to make disciples who will follow Jesus 24/7, 365 days a year.
Our main preparation to make others disciples is to be one ourselves.
